Here’s a poster illustration done by my 12 year old son, Nikhil.

“Deforestation” and “Global Warming” celebrating with high fives as they look at a concrete jungle, while 2012 is looming large.

He really means it. He spent all afternoon making this poster. I promised him that I’ll put it up on my blog.

Guys, please help me help him — Please spread this message around.

Thanks!

The Clay Experiment :-)

I was at home while the kids were at the dining table playing around with coloured modeling clay. It was too tempting and the next I knew, I was sitting along with them fooling around with clay. I never tried clay illustration or animation before. I think it is a very difficult medium and needs lots of patience. I hung on for a couple of hours, but thereafter, I seemed to have run out of patience with this one. I also think that there is a lot that depends on the right kind of tools and the right kind of clay. For example, this clay (Reynold’s Artoons Dough Kit) is essentially meant for little kids to play with, and is not for professional illustration or modelling use. It soon dries up, and after some time, the oil sweats out, spoiling the paper.

I want to learn the medium and use it for book illustration and animation. This is my first attempt :-)

Story Illustration – work in progress

I’m working on illustrations for a story called ” I love you, Anna!” written by my daughter, Neha. I’m still at a stage where I’m experimenting with the style. My most natural style is pen and ink, and so obviously my first exploration was in that direction. This is my first rough drawing, and she feels that the characters could be more modern and contemporary. So I’ll have to work on this again. I’m sure I’m in for the long haul as far as this project goes, as I’m up with a tough customer :-)

That apart, I am really missing my scanner, which is in Bombay. I had a torrid time trying to get my drawing into the computer. I shot a picture of the drawing with a camera, downloaded the drivers for the camera and installed them, transferred the picture to the computer and then did the best I could to manipulate the image! I apologize for the image quality. Maybe I should stick to my cintiq till I can get back to my scanner.

Anyway, here goes…

started with a pencil sketch on A3 size ivory paper

This is the stage I'm currently at :-)

I’ll keep you posted on further developments!

DDS 2010

Every year, the graduating batch of the Industrial Design Centre (IDC), IIT Bombay showcases their creative work and projects through a grand exhibition. The event is called the “Design Degree Show”. This year’s event has been named “Aaroha – DDS 2010″ and will be held on the 22nd, 23rd and 24th of June, 2010 at the IDC, IIT Bombay and on the 26th and 27th of June, 2010 at the Nehru Centre, Bombay.

Apart from the exhibition, there will be seminars and workshops held by professionals and experts from the industry. This makes for a wonderfully interactive stage between the industry and academia, and brings the students and professionals together.

For those of you who would like to get more information on this event, click here.

More details on this as we get closer!
