ToonPool
ToonPool is such an amazing website for cartoonists to showcase their talent and get exposure. I realised this only after I suddenly stumbled upon this portal sometime in February this year. Aspiring and established cartoonists alike should check this site. I posted a link in one of my earlier posts. I became a member in february this year and so far I have had more than 21,000 hits to my gallery. Though I’m happy with this, it could have been a lot more. I’m sure that the quality of the drawings are the single biggest factor in getting more hits
So there’s a lot of room for improvement for me.
Try this out.

Manipal Animation
It is really heartening that animation education is picking up in India and aspiring animators now have many options than we ever had before. During the early nineties, passionate guys who wanted to somehow get into the animation/computer graphics/special effects industries had no options at all. Most of them were self taught, and decided to weather the vicissitudes, creating opportunities for themselves and in the process growing in their careers in a slowly growing industry. People with passion and talent came into the animation field from various fields – engineering, science, arts, commerce etc.
Towards the late nineties and early 2000’s, one could see many private institutions spring up that taught animation courses. Most of these (except NID, Ahmedabad, Heart Animation, Hyderabad and ZICA, Hyderabad/Bombay) were short term fast track courses – mainly catering to the requirements of the growing animation industry. Many companies started getting established which were taking on outsourced projects, and they were looking out for trained people in specific areas. There was not much of a choice for someone who wanted to get a formal degree education in animation in India.
The scene is different now. It is nice to see many universities offering 3 year animation degree courses. Many private animation institutes have also started offering long term courses, with matured and evolved course curricula (Picasso, Toonskool etc). Apart from this, many tie ups between the industry and academia have been witnessed in the past few years.
This is a good time for aspiring animators. I hope many more institutes come up. The animation industry is woefully short of trained animators.
As a consultant, I was recently happily involved with Manipal University in designing their animation and gaming course curricula. They offer a 3 year BSc Animation course. I enjoyed the experience of designing their animation/gaming course curriculum.
Mascot
Posted by phani in Illustration on September 27th, 2009
This was done about two years ago. I did this as a mascot for an animation institute at Bangalore that I consulted for. I found this mascot character design while I was going through some old files, and thought I’ll share it with you. I remember I drew this directly into flash using the pencil tool.

Pen and Ink Drawing
Posted by phani in Illustration on September 26th, 2009
I went to Deccan Pen store in Secunderabad this evening. This place is quite well known for the variety of art materials it stocks, especially for its collection of pens. I visit this place every once in a while, and try out different kinds of fancy pens that it stocks. I bought an ink pen today (I like ink pens, actually!). This is a pelikano junior pen that holds ink cartridges. I found it fun to use. Here’s a quick doodle I did while trying out my new pen. I quite enjoyed the feel of the pen. Hopefully I will get down to drawing something more meaningful with this pen in the future than this doodle here

Quick Sketches – 25th Sept 09
Posted by phani in Illustration on September 25th, 2009
I started working on a very interesting illustration project, for which I was reading the manuscript for almost the whole day today. I will post the illustrations here sometime when they get done. I took a break in the evening to doodle and here are today’s character study doodles. I drew these characters straight into Flash using a wacom tablet.

A typically "deserted" street in India
For those of you who are interested, I have separately posted the process of creating this illustration in the “My Approach” section. Please check. Thanks.

Street – 3

Here’s the cleaned up inked image, after erasing out the pencil lines and changing the brightness and contrast values. We are now ready to colour.

I decided that I will stick to flat colours. The colouring stage took me longer than I expected. I was estimating around 2 hours, but it took me almost 3 and a half hours. I used the cintiq 12wx for the colouring. While I enjoyed working on this illustration, I realised that whenever I draw crowds, I involuntarily draw each character in the crowd much simpler, and with lesser details. I must work on that aspect, and increase my patience further to be able to include much more complexity in the characters and other details.
Here’s the coloured image. Hope you like it.

Street – 2

I got up early today and got myself a hot cup of coffee, and straight went to my drawing board. I was eager to continue from where I left the drawing last night. A couple of hours of inking later, this is the stage we are at. The inking is over, but as you can see, the pencil lines are still visible. I haven’t erased them out yet. Also, the brightness/contrast values have not yet been tinkered with.
I spent almost three hours on this drawing so far.
Once I am done with the clean up, I should be coloring this. Let’s see how it turns out.
I have a few other things to work on today , so I hope I get the time do the coloring today.
In any case, I’ll get back with another post soon.
